Vintage Russian toy vehicles featuring whimsical character illustrations reproduced as colourful large format art prints. A collection of unmistakably Cold War-era Soviet graphics with a folksy, Eastern bloc feel.
Each AVTOMOBIL fine-art print is limited to 100 numbered editions printed on heavyweight cotton paper using archive grade, high-density pigments to create vibrant colours.
While children in the west were collecting Matchbox and Hot Wheels, Soviet youngsters played with these whimsical metal vehicles. Unmistakably Cold War-era Soviet in style they feature wraparound character drawings.
We first spotted these during a visit to a Moscow flea market and were instantly hooked on the folksy, Eastern bloc illustrations. Several scouting missions later we had amassed quite a collection to bring back to England.
Photographing each one with a macro lens revealed the unique patina of these loved playthings. It also enabled us to produce a range of fine-art prints at a range of sizes from A4 to A2.
This is a fine-art, digital print on heavyweight 315gsm 100% cotton, white, Photorag paper with a subtle surface texture. We use high-density pigments which produce vibrant colours and accurate neutrals, additionally this gives us complete control and consistent results throughout the process. All of our full-colour prints use lightfast inks, tested to resist fading for 75 years, in effect made to last a lifetime.
An edition number is given to all prints as they roll off the printing press. In addition, we include a signed certificate with every purchase providing extra assurance that you are buying a genuine work. Proof of provenance shows the artwork’s title, catalogue number and our embossed logo to therefore proving authenticity.
